With two massively popular prepping shows on cable TV and more on the way, it is apparently time for our self-appointed arbiters of taste to call us crazy for watching them. That’s right folks, it is no longer cool to be a prepper. Neil Genzlinger said so!
Here’s a link to Genzlinger’s recent NY Times piece on prepper TV shows. Take a few minutes to fully absorb what the man is saying before we move on.
I’m not going to serve up a testy “WTF?” rebuttal of Neil’s ridiculous overreaction since someone beat me to it (and did a better job than I could’ve).
Here’s the main reason liberal New York infotainment industry elites like Genzlinger are upset that the peasants are prepping: it loosens ever so slightly the hold they have on our consciousness. It starts one day when you’re randomly flipping through the channels and come across a show like “Doomsday Preppers”. You watch a few episodes and realize it’s not a joke. It’s not “reality TV”, it’s a documentary about how Americans are getting ready for bad things. But in reality, we have always been getting ready – you just never noticed it until now. Prepping is just another one of the things that define us as Americans. And whenever we start to slack off in our preps, our own government is there to give us a gentle reminder.
Ironically, those same elites – the “chosen” ones who have their hands on the levers of power – are way ahead of us. Heck, even Tom Cruise is hip to the bunker fad. Wonder what Genzlinger has to say about that?
Seriously though, what should a prepper do when their favorite hobby/lifestyle has become a completely mainstream fashion statement?
